Have you been diagnosed with severe hearing loss? Do you currently use hearing aids? Are you unhappy with them and unable to hold a conversation without looking at the person? Are you adult age 18 or older?
If you answered yes to these questions, cochlear implants may be an option for you.
A cochlear implant is a small, electronic device that can provide the sense of sound to a person who is deaf or severely hard-of-hearing. The device can be particularly useful for people who receive little or no benefit from hearing aids.

Candidates for Cochlear Implants
Adults who lose hearing after learning to speak usually do very well with cochlear implants. They can also help adults who have never heard and have no language skills improve sound awareness and lip-reading.
Most patients develop excellent hearing compared to before the implant and many are able to use the phone. Cochlear implants do not, however, restore normal hearing.
*Only available for adults age 18 and older.

Latest Advancements
There have been major advancements in protecting the patient’s natural hearing during implantation. Because of this, new devices are available that use a hearing aid for certain sounds and an implant for others.
Newer implants offer many advantages such as special programming for different hearing environments and some are waterproof so patients can keep them on while in the shower or pool.
